A New Pumping Station “Snapped Up” at Bristol Zoo Croc House

This spring, Bristol Zoo set out on a bold project: relocating the rich, diverse Central African Forest of Monte Alén National Park in Equatorial Guinea to Southwest England. Standout attractions include the new Crocodile House, where Critically Endangered slender-snouted crocodiles will live alongside rare freshwater fish from Cameroon. The goal is to create a living, breathing slice of West Africa - complete with natural plants, basking areas with heat lamps, and carefully maintained water and air temperatures.
The Challenge
Creating this habitat posed a unique challenge: treating water from the crocodile pool and backwash from the filter system in a way that's safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly.
Therefore, a robust and truly fit-for-purpose pumping system was required, suited to the unique nature of the application.
The Solution
T-T provided a Jupiter® package pumping station to tackle the challenge. Key features included:
- A robust, single moulded chamber construction: 4.5m deep chamber with 50mm ABS pipework, ideal for the application and drainage infrastructure. 15.5m³ capacity.
- Robust submersible pumps: DGO50 Vortex Impeller pumps, cast iron construction, silicon carbide mechanical seals with an impeller design most suited for fibrous and solid heavy waste waters.
- Preassembled, factory tested: Internal pipework, non-return valves, and control panel fitted before delivery for fast, hassle-free installation.
- Fully automated controls: Manufactured and tested in-house by T-T Controls®, a division of T-T. Reliable and inclusive of application-relevant features and alarms.
- Effective solid waste management: Smooth internal walls and integral benching ensure that waste cannot accumulate over time, resulting in system failure.
- Custom-engineered: Built specifically for Bristol Zoo’s Crocodile House to maintain precise water and environmental conditions.
Thanks to T-T’s precision, backed by T-T’s unique BBA (British Board of Agrement) accreditation for such a product of this type, the pumping station now reliably manages the waste waters from the crocodile and fish habitats. The Jupiter® ensures optimal conditions for the animals while providing a safe, durable, and low-maintenance solution, exactly what a world-class zoo project demands.
