Ladylees Farm Slashes Energy Use by 62% with T-T’s Slurry System Upgrade

Ladylees Farm Slashes Energy Use by 62% with T-T’s Slurry System Upgrade

Ladylees Farm, situated in Swadlincote, Staffordshire, had been experiencing the problem of high power consumption and an outdated slurry management system. With a minimal power supply on hand, the farm felt under pressure to find a more energy-saving solution. After a recommendation from an adjacent farm, the owners consulted with T-T Agricultural & Environmental® for help in upgrading their outdated slurry separator system.

As part of T-T's ongoing quest to eradicate unnecessary power usage on British farms, a full site inspection and farm walk were carried out. The inspection indicated that the existing installation was hugely oversized for its intended use. The separator had an 11kW motor fitted and was being fed by an 11kW pump. Moreover, there was another 15kW pump running to transfer slurry from the farm's top tank to the separator reception pit, resulting in the total power required by the system being a considerable 37kW.

Taking into careful consideration the herd size and operational requirements, T-T suggested upgrading the system that would not only solve performance demands but also drastically reduce energy consumption.

Equipment Supplied:

Pump Replacement:

  • Old Pumps: one 11kW and one 15kw pump (26kW total)
  • New Pumps: Three Cri-Man submersible chopper pumps, two 4kW and one 2.2kW (back-up transfer pump – additional application)
  • Saving: 15.8kW
  • Added Benefit: Submersible design significantly simplifies maintenance and removes the safety hazard of lifting long-shaft pumps (3–4 meters) out of the slurry pit.

This strategic replacement saved overall system power from 37kW to just 14.2kW, equaling a 22.8kW saving - 62% reduction in energy consumption. Not only did the new system meet the farm's performance specification, but using submersible chopper pumps also brought improved safety and maintenance convenience. Operators no longer need to pull out long-shaft pumps, which reduces downtime and risk.

T-T's support facilitated Ladylees Farm to significantly improve its slurry system into something more efficient, sustainable, and manageable. Such a venture is in itself a best-case scenario of how careful equipment selection and energy-conscious replacement can transform agricultural activity where power supply is a limiting factor.
