Replacement of Obsolete Large-Diameter Valves in Iraq

T-T was approached by an Iraqi contractor to supply replacement high-performance multi-door recoil check valves. The client provided photographs of the existing valves which were manufactured decades ago by Blakeborough & Sons - along with their dimensions and hydraulic requirements. These valves were not only defective but also obsolete and beyond economic repair. The replacements needed to match the original site-specific dimensions to avoid costly pipework modifications, which would have significantly increased project expenses.
The Solution
T-T Flow engineered and custom-manufactured fast-acting, multi-door, metal-seated recoil check valves. These valves were chosen for their exceptional ability to prevent slam during rapid flow reversal events- a critical requirement for the system.
Multi-door recoil check valves incorporate inclined seats and restricted disc travel, enabling rapid closure to prevent water hammer and eliminate slam. This proven design combines mechanical and hydraulic principles, removing the need for external components such as weighted arms, springs, or dampers. The result is a self-contained, highly reliable solution for demanding hydraulic conditions.
Products Supplied:
-
5 × DN900
-
5 × DN800
-
2 × DN600
All valves were metal-seated, rated to 16 bar, and drilled to EN1092 (PN16). Key features included:
-
Construction: Ductile iron body with robust fusion-bonded epoxy coating.
-
Seats: Precision-machined weld-overlay bronze seats for high flow velocities.
-
Components: Self-lubricating bronze bushes, acid-resistant stainless-steel hinges, and fasteners for corrosion resistance and long-term reliability.
-
Compliance: All coatings and elastomeric seals sourced from WRAS-approved suppliers, ensuring suitability for potable water applications.
Why Multi-Door Recoil Check Valves?
These valves are ideal for large-scale, high-flow systems due to their:
-
Improved sealing efficiency
-
Rapid closing response (recoil action)
-
Enhanced durability and longevity
-
High flow capacity
-
Reduced maintenance requirements
-
Superior resistance to water hammer and surge pressure
-
Flexible installation and adaptability
This project demonstrated T-T’s ability to deliver highly specialised, engineered solutions for complex hydraulic challenges. By replacing obsolete Blakeborough & Sons valves with custom-designed multi-door recoil check valves, we ensured seamless integration with existing infrastructure, eliminating costly pipework alterations. The new valves provide superior performance under demanding conditions, offering rapid closure without slam, exceptional durability and compliance with potable water standards.
Through precision engineering and attention to detail, T-T delivered a solution that not only met but exceeded client expectations. Enhancing system reliability, reducing maintenance needs and safeguarding operational longevity for years to come.
