Revitalising an Icon – Millennium Square Fountain, Leeds

Revitalising an Icon – Millennium Square Fountain, Leeds

The iconic fountain in Mandela Gardens, at the heart of Millennium Square in Leeds city centre, had fallen into disrepair after years of neglect. Once a vibrant centrepiece of the public space, the fountain had become an eyesore, with stagnant water and peeling paint detracting from the area’s appeal.

After significant public interest and media attention, a full restoration was commissioned. T-T was brought on board to supply essential equipment and provide technical expertise to help return the feature to its former glory.

Challenge

The fountain had been non-functional for over six years. The water feature’s mechanical systems were outdated and no longer operational, and the visual appeal had suffered due to poor maintenance. The challenge was not only to restore functionality but to elevate the installation to modern efficiency and aesthetic standards — all while working within the constraints of a busy public space.

The Solution

T-T provided a comprehensive pumping and control solution to support the full restoration of the fountain, including:

  • New Control Panel – Custom-built to meet the needs of a dynamic and reliable fountain system.

  • Pumps Supplied:

    • 1 ×T-T 100 X 1 centrifugal pump

    • 2 ×Liberator 316SS 750 submersible pumps – constructed from high-grade stainless steel for durability and performance.

Our engineers worked closely with GW Pumping Service to deliver design assistance and on-site installation guidance, ensuring the new system met performance and safety standards.

The restored fountain now functions flawlessly, with powerful and consistent water displays that enhance the beauty of Millennium Square. The revitalised feature, complete with new paintwork and upgraded equipment, has quickly become a point of pride for the community and a refreshed focal point in Leeds city centre.
