Recoil Check Valves Protect Hong Kong's New Territories

Working alongside local drainage engineers, T-T Flow supplied high-performance recoil check valves to avoid slam under rapid flow reversal situations, helping protect communities within Hong Kong’s New Territories.

The Problem

Tseng Tau is a village community in the Snap Sze Heung area of Tai Po District, located close to the shore of Three Fathoms Cove in Hong Kong’s New Territories.

During works to the pumped drainage network at the Tseng Tau Pumping Station, there was a requirement for high-performance check valves that would avoid slam under rapid flow reversal situations, something which can be potentially damaging to system components and equipment. Engineers also required valves fitted with flow-sensing switches to allow remote monitoring.

The Solution

Working alongside local drainage engineers, T-T Flow identified and presented our fast-acting recoil check valve as the most suitable solution. Recoil check valves feature an inclined seat and restricted disc travel which results in rapid closing to avoid water hammer and prevent slam. The valve is of a proven design and eliminates the need for external elements (such as weighted arms, springs or dampers) to achieve rapid closure without slam.

Supplied through a specialist engineering intermediary to the Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong Government, T-T Flow supplied and delivered four DN200 recoil check valves rated to 16 Bar. The valves are manufactured from ductile iron with a robust fusion bonded epoxy coating, featuring precision machined weld-overlay bronze seats ideal for higher flow velocities. Meanwhile, acid-resistant stainless steel hinges and fasteners provide corrosion resistance and trouble-free operational longevity. 

The supplied valves are fitted with mechanical limit switches to relay signals to an onsite SCADA system, which continually monitors parameters to ensure site-wide operational efficiencies.
