Swing Check Valves for Shell’s North Sea Platform

T-T Flow supplied swing check valves to Shell’s offshore Leman Alpha platform, a major gas production facility in the North Sea some 29 miles off the Norfolk coast.

The Problem

The Leman Alpha complex is a major gas production facility located 43 miles northeast of Lowestoft on the Leman oil field. Discovered in 1966 and named after the Leman Sandbank beneath which it is located in the North Sea, the field has an 800 ft thick sandstone reservoir running at a depth of over 6,000ft. The Leman Alpha installation produces and processes natural gas from its own wells, as well as importing and processing gas from the other six Leman platforms.

While upgrading accommodation facilities at the platform, there was a requirement for proven and reliable WRAS-approved check valves for the potable water system. The supplied valves needed to be suitable for the demanding saline environment and provide reliable performance over a long life.

The Solution

T-T's commitment to providing quality market-leading products secured an order to supply several swing check valves. The client was impressed with the corrosion-resistant A4 (SS316 / 1.4401) fasteners fitted as standard, along with the generous fusion bonded epoxy coating and large inspection cover aiding any future maintenance.  T-T’s check valves were ideally suited to the demanding saline environment.

Self-acting swing check valves are used to prevent pipeline backflow in pumped and gravity applications, designed to comply with EN1074-3 and featuring EN1092/PN16 flange drillings.  Valves feature gunmetal precision machined seats for optimal sealing performance and have an acid-resistant stainless steel shaft acting through self-lubricating bronze bushes. The valves are manufactured from ductile iron with a corrosion-resistant fusion bonded epoxy coating together with all elastomeric components to BS6920, ensuring suitability for potable water duties.
