Flap Valves for Tidal Wall Flood Defence Scheme

T-T Pumps was delighted to supply specialist Double Hinged Flap Valves for a major flood defence scheme at Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex, helping contribute to protecting the town from future flood events.

The Problem

Flood risks to UK coastal settlements are increasing due to rising sea levels and an increase in extreme weather events from the effects of climate change. Extensive modelling carried out by the Environment Agency has determined the extent of potential future flood events over the next 100 years and found that existing flood defences in the Adur estuary provide insufficient protection, leaving Shoreham-by-Sea potentially exposed.  

Following the review, the Environmental Agency, in conjunction with West Sussex County Council and Adur District Council following public consultation, have embarked on new defences, involving the construction of new headwalls by a specialist Dutch marine contractor. 

As part of the Adur Tidal Walls Flood Defence Scheme, there was a requirement for Double Hinged Flap Valves to prevent water back-flowing up pipework and river/coastal outfalls.

The Solution

Working closely with the client, T-T’s specialist valve division, T-T Flow, was entrusted to supply self-acting flap valves for the new tidal wall defences. T-T has extensive experience in this area, allowing us to provide the optimum solution for the scheme.
