Birmingham Resilience Project - Specialist Valves

The Birmingham Resilience Project, set to be completed this year, is one of Severn Trent’s largest infrastructure projects designed to develop an alternative water supply for Birmingham.  As part of this scheme, T-T Flow has provided a range of specialist pressure management and flow control valves.

Since 1904, Birmingham’s water has travelled 72 miles from Wales through to the Elan Valley Aqueduct (EVA), a reliable source of drinking water. To ensure resilience to this supply, the aqueduct requires care and maintenance to safeguard its operational life, during this repair work phase, a vital backup supply is necessary to keep the clean water flowing.

Now in its final stages, the £300 million Birmingham Resilience Project has delivered a 26km pipeline and pumping station to take water across the country during these planned shutdowns.

As part of this substantial project, T-T has supplied a range of specialist valves which are appropriate for the project. Team Flow selected a range of metal seat gate valves to BS5163 and rated to 40 bar/580psi. These feature a durable fusion bonded epoxy coated ductile iron body, welded gunmetal seats, clockwise closing stainless steel non-rising stems and are flanged PN40, fitted with a reduction spur gearbox prepared for actuation.  Due to the custom nature of these valves, few manufacturers could satisfy the specification and deliver within the timeframe.

Additionally, a range of hydraulically operated automatic pressure reducing control valves rated to 40 bar were chosen. These valves also feature a fusion bonded epoxy coated ductile iron body, corrosion resistant stainless-steel internals, reinforced diaphragm and offering accurate pressure regulation.  Valves were selected due to their ease of commissioning and availability.

These valves play a crucial role in controlling, isolating and providing the required flow for the pipeline ensuring the water pressure is reduced in accordance with pipeline changes and flow requirements. The metal seat gate valves isolate the pipeline when required while the control valve continuously maintains a predetermined pressure.

Peter Hindley, Commercial Director, comments, “It’s exciting to be a part of a project that will provide a new source of water for Birmingham and managing it’s increasing demand, for more than 1 million people. This is a huge investment in the city and I am glad that T-T Flow could be a part of it. The team worked hard to ensure that all of the clients’ requirements were met and the project was delivered on time”.

This is just one of the large scale projects that T-T Flow has been involved with. T-T Flow have vast experience in the manufacture and fabrication of both standard and specialist valves for a range of large and small projects.
