Metal Seat Gate Valves for Famous Yorkshire Reservoir

Holme Styes Reservoir in Yorkshire, regularly featured in BBC’s Last of the Summer Wine, is a historic mill reservoir that feeds and is fed by several rivers in Yorkshire. The reservoir itself and its outflowing rivers are an essential part of the local ecosystem, requiring careful water level management to preserve important natural habitats.

The Problem

The reservoir’s existing gate valves, used to control the incoming and outgoing flow of water, had become unreliable and costly to maintain due to their age. The managing water authority made the decision to replace the valves to achieve consistently reliable isolation for more effective water level management.

Installation into a reservoir means that the chosen valves would be subject to high flow velocities. Because of this, careful consideration of the valves’ design and construction materials was necessary to ensure they could withstand the application’s demanding hydraulic conditions.

The Solution

The specialist framework contractor for the job came to the experts in T-T Flow to specify and supply suitable gate valves for the job.

Our team supplied a DN100 and DN300 metal seat wedge gate valve, designed in compliance with BS5163 / EN1074 and hydrostatically tested to EN12266. Their high strength ductile iron construction and 16 Bar pressure rating made these valves ideal for withstanding the reservoirs’ harsh operating environment.

In order to provide leak-proof and high-pressure sealing as required by the client, the valve faces were precision machined with mechanically retained copper alloy seats. The valves feature several design aspects that lend them to a long-lasting and reliable flow control solution, including a:

• Thrust-taking bonnet to reduce stress on components
• Stainless steel non-rising stem with rolled thread to reduce operating friction
• Corrosion resistant durable fusion-bonded epoxy coating
• Self-draining wedge and WRAS approved construction materials to negate any water contamination risks
