A gearbox is an actuator that produces mechanical advantage through a series of gears resulting in reduced input torque to operate a valve. Variants include multi-turn bevel gearboxes whereby the input and output planes are offset by 90°, multi-turn spur gearboxes whereby the input and output planes are shared, and worm gearboxes whereby the input is 90° to the output which commonly travels through a quadrant. Gearboxes can be driven via a manual handwheel or electric multiturn actuator. Reversing gearboxes are also available.
Handy hint: Bear in mind that reducing the output torque increases the number of input turns.
