Submersible pumps do not need to be ATEX rated, however, this depends on the application and preferred requirements by the client. For example, water companies in the UK generally request ATEX approved pumps within their site due to the nature of waste water pumping stations potentailly containing explosive gas.

A sump pump, or drainage pump is typically designed to pump clear waters. A sewage pump is designed to have a higher solids handling, so as not to get blocked by the sewage. You would need to check the pump you are using has the correct solids handling for the liquid you are looking to pump.
