Double Hinge Flap Valves for the Thames Tideway Scheme

T-T Flow supplied double hinge flap valves to the Thames Tideway Tunnel, the UK’s biggest sewer upgrade for more than 150 years - and one of the largest and most challenging engineering projects for a generation.

Beginning in 2016 and expected to be completed by 2024, the £4.3bn project has been dubbed London’s ‘super sewer', running the course of the Thames and designed to intercept more than 94% of the millions of tonnes of sewage that currently flows into the city’s existing overloaded Victorian Sewer System.

The Problem

As part of the project at Blackfriars Bridge Foreshore, a key part of the project for intercepting spills into the River Thames, there was a requirement for custom double hinge flap valves to prevent debris backflow.

Working closely alongside the supply chain, T-T Flow, a division of T-T Pumps, supplied custom double hinge flap valves for the project, working to exceed stringent material compliance requirements and satisfy critical delivery timescales to avoid costly construction delays.

The Solution

T-T Flow supplied 3 x DN375 double hinge flap valves with enhanced coatings and materials of construction for operational longevity in a demanding environment. Designed for outfall applications offering improved aesthetics, the valves prevent tidal backflow and debris from entering the sewer network.

Standard valve features include a circular aperture, scalloped ductile iron design for reduced weight, and precision machined copper-alloy seating faces for improved seating characteristics. Meanwhile, the double hinge mechanism enables alignment assurance, while there are austenitic stainless steel anti-tamper hinge pins, durable coatings and a lifting eye to facilitate manual opening.
