Isolation valves for wastewater recycling in India

Earlier this year T-T Flow was tasked with supplying isolation valves to a decentralised wastewater treatment system that supplies naturally treated water to Nehru Gardens in Alwar, India.

The Problem

The 5-hectare gardens in Alwar are maintained using recycled wastewater, fed from a sewage drain carrying around 5 million litres per day from nearby settlements.

Around 50,000 litres were being diverted to the wastewater treatment system daily, however it was being underutilised as the system had a capacity of 100,000 litres a day.

The Solution

The T-T Flow team selected two different isolation valves that would allow maximum inflow for the treatment system - fitted with reliable double-acting pneumatic actuators to ensure that the 100,000 litre a day limit is not exceeded.

The knife gate valve supplied is uni-directional - only allowing for liquid to flow in one direction - and constructed from cast iron. Using cast iron means the valve has the high durability and corrosion resistance needed for installation in a demanding environment while handling harsh mediums, such as sewage and suspended solids. T-T's knife gate valves are also designed without internal cavities, reducing the risk of sediment particles accumulating and negatively affecting flow rate, seal quality and overall valve lifespan.

The specified wafer butterfly valve is designed for optimal isolation performance, being constructed from cast iron and stainless steel for sealing performance that will reliably prevent backflow in the system. The pneumatic actuator was fitted via direct mounting to the butterfly valve, eliminating the need for additional brackets or couplings and providing a more streamlined installation.

T-T Flow's isolation valves are enabling the decentralised wastewater treatment service to be utilised to its full potential, providing the water needed to maintain the 5-hectare Nehru Gardens in India, even during peak summer heat.
