New Electric Motor Efficiency Regulations from 1st July 2021
The Commission Regulation (EU) No 2019/1781 comes into force on 1st July 2021, setting new requirements for the minimum efficiency of electric motors for the European Economic Area (EEA) market.
The new regulations replace the previous Commission Regulation (EU) 640/2009 and are designed to help the European Union meet energy efficiency targets. A second stage of regulations that will further increase the requirements are also being rolled out in 2 years time on 1st July 2023.

ELECTRIC MOTOR EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS 2021
The new regulations apply to electric motors cage induction, single-speed, three-phase, with a frequency of 50 Hz, 60 Hz or 50-60 Hz with:
- Speed from 2 to 8 poles
- Nominal voltage (Un) up to 1000 V
- Power rating (Pn) between 0.12 kW and 1000 kW
- Features based on continuous operation
- Suitability to DOL staring
WHAT ARE THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES TO SAER PRODUCTS?
TT Pumps is the main UK distributor for SAER Electropumps, including the SAER IR electric pump range which has been improved with the incorporation of IE4 motors for premium efficiency.
The main differences to SAER products include:
- Minimum efficiency requirements to be applied on 8 poles motors as well
- The new minimum efficiency requirements will apply on motors starting from 0,12 up to 1000kW
- Mandatory IE3 efficiency level for 3-phase motors with rated output from 0.75 to 1000 kW (the IE2 + VSD alternative will no longer be allowed in EEA)
- Mandatory IE2 efficiency level for 3-phase motors with rated output from 0.12 kW and below 0.75 kW.
- IE4 motors available on request
